APPEARANCE
Lucia's defining trait is definitely her hair - long, thick and bold red, and it wouldn't be quite the same any other way. It is commonly up in a high, trailing ponytail with two strands left to frame her face and half of her bangs clipped up on the left side. However, Lucia likes to fiddle with her hair so it isn't unusual to see her sporting different styles. In the colder seasons her hair is usually down to help keep her warm.
But enough about her hair! The rest of Lucia is fairly bold-looking as well. Her large, almond-shaped eyes are a particularly striking hazel, almost looking vaguely golden in some lighting. The lashes over her eyes are also rather long and thick, accenting their size. Overall her face is quite feminine - oval shaped with soft features such as a small, slightly bulbous nose and rosy lips. (Unfortunately, once those lips get talking the femininity is pretty much ruined.)
Her personality is in contrast to the rest of her body as well. Lucia stands at a good height and bears a healthy weight - 5'7" and about 128 pounds. She has a well-proportioned hourglass figure going on everywhere, and a pretty fit physique to boot, thanks to her near constant activity. Her body is generally flattered by her clothing choices, though they are usually made with practicality in mind. In the warmer months she wears a lot of short but slightly looser clothing, and when it's colder it's usually just the opposite. They're not particularly flashy, though Lucia does rather like to accessorize with hats, gloves, scarves, bands, and other such things.
On the whole, Lucia looks like a human, though she has thin, crescent-shaped birthmarks on either side of her neck and her ribcage, as if she had gills in both of those spots. When she is exposed to relatively small amounts of water though (e.g. if she is lightly splashed, in the rain, or has some parts submerged), her skin's texture changes slightly to that of smooth scales, and sometimes a matching pattern will faintly appear over her skin. However, this isn't the case when her body is immersed in it up to her hips, like in the bath or the ocean - when her full body is in water her tail can be seen, long fins and light yellow scales and all.

HISTORY
Lucia grew up on a small island settlement of merfolk off the coast of May Falls called Tipa. Her little hamlet community was founded many generations ago by people who were happy on land, but not quite ready to live amongst other races yet. Over time this feeling has been preserved; however some families simply like the small, close-knit feeling of the island.
If you ask Lucia though, it's just one big cluster of indecisive people half-assing life on land.
So, as one can imagine, she constantly longed for the land beyond the horizon, the faint silhouette of the mainland which most ancestral merfolk so coveted. This began when she was merely 7. While Lucia was not unhappy, she was unsatisfied. Sure family and friends were great, but there was no way in hell she wanted to be stuck on this tiny speck in the sea forever.
Boats would come and go occasionally from the island to the mainland, usually to get some goods that they could not get on the island. Lucia would often ask to accompany them, but her parents forbade her every time. When she was young, they would not take her nor let anyone else. When she was a little older, they had a new reason. "It's comfortable here, Lucy," they would tell her. "The mainland is just like this but bigger and with more people. It's nothing special."
"People there would dream of living on a lovely island like ours."
Lucia was about 15 when they began to pull this, and her patience was being tested. She made a few attempts in rebellion to sneak onto boats that were leaving, but she was caught every time. Soon, she just began to get angry. Her parents were certainly lying - how could anyone want to be in a dinky place like this?
Then, one day, fate gave her a source of answers... and something much more.
One day, while moping on the beach, she noticed a glass bottle on the shore. Curious, she picked it up. A rolled up piece of paper was inside, secured by the cork at the top. Obviously, she swiftly opened it and read the note within. It was from a boy in May Falls, the place beyond the sea. The note was simple. short, and to the point - mere request to begin a mail correspondence, companied of course with a return address.
So Lucia, ravenously and increasingly intrigued by the world beyond, wrote a letter in return. She asked one of the shipmen to deliver it, a particular young man who seemed to always fancy her older sister. Obligingly he did it, and came with a letter of response upon returning. And thus began her correspondence with the boy. Over the years they exchanged information and got to know one another, becoming close friends despite the distance.
Shortly before her 19th birthday, her friend mentioned that his family would be moving out of May Falls, and that he would like to meet face-to-face before that happened. However, just as Lucia readied her reply, the ship that visited the mainland became damaged in a storm. In this event the crew had also been injured, postponing the next voyage and her confirmation.
Anxious and increasingly irritated at what really just felt like imprisonment in Tipa, Lucia met her limit. After confronting her family once her birthday came and passed, she told them she was leaving. No questions asked, and nothing they could do to stop her. And, since she was a full adult by that time, they let her go... binding her with promises to visit every now and then.
Eventually, the day finally came. With ship fixed and crew healed, they set out to May Falls. But, of course, it was too late by then. The boy's family had left and had been secretive about where they went.
Lucia was greatly discouraged, but her spirits were not crushed. After all, the rest of the world had just been unravelled to her! She planned to set up base in May Falls anyway, and so she continued with her plans and started her new life.
